Hi Gang,
As many of you know, Verizon had a massive communications outage today. This
outage was a result of a "fiber cut" somewhere between Norwalk and Bowling
Green. Among the notable effects were:
1. No 911 service in Ottawa County from 9:38 AM to sometime after lunch.
2. No long-distance calling out of Ottawa County & "other counties" from
9:38 AM to 3:18 PM.
3. No WCNet dialulp Internet service in Ottawa County, Norwalk area, Ashland
area, etc. from 9:38 AM to 3:18 PM.
4. No ATM & DSL service to Norwalk, Ashland, Port Clinton, Oak Harbor and
"other areas" from 9:38 AM until 3:18 PM.
5. No "frame relay" DSL in Bowling Green and "other areas" from 9:38 AM
until 3:18 PM.
Needless to say, many other failures beyond those listed may have resulted
from this communications outage.
Currently, the most important aspect of the recovery from this outage
involves DSL users in Bowling Green. In short, the restored DSL service
frequently operates at 6Kbps (yes, 20% of the speed of a 28.8Kbps dialup
connection). This situation occurs because Verizon has not repaired the
fiber cut, but instead re-routed the traffic as best they could. For DSL
customers experiencing slow speeds, we need to call Verizon "Tier 2 Support"
in Long Beach, California, and request that they rebuild the PVC on a
customer-by-customer basis. The slow speeds are caused by "too many hops" in
the PVC and rebuilding them generally solves the problem. The Verizon/Long
Beach number is 888-483-9800, and it CANNOT be given out to our subscribers.
Only WCNet personnel can use this number and, if we pass it out to others,
we will be cutoff from this important support vehicle.
It's important to monitor our VMAIL throughout this weekend to identify and
assist DSL customers affected by this outage.
Best Regards,
Gary
